Earthology is the long awaited follow up to The Whitefield ÛÛ°
Brothers' cult-classic In The Raw. While In The Raw's ÛÛ
hypnotic, defiantly psychedelic funk music was grounded in ÛÛ
the great musical traditions of both America and Africa, ÛÛ
Earthology finds the Brothers infusing their funk (or, as ÛÛ
the Brothers prefer it, "raw soul") with musical traditions ÛÛ
that span the globe. To achieve the Earthology's unique ÛÛ
sound, the Brothers employed an array of instruments and put ÛÛ
in a dizzying amount of research: traveling the world, ÛÛ
joining different bands and ethnic performing ensembles, ÛÛ
amassing and absorbing field recordings, trawling used ÛÛ
record bins for lost examples of global psychedelic-fusion, ÛÛ
over a period spanning some fifteen years. Like In The Raw, ÛÛ
Earthology is grounded by a "raw soul" band's building ÛÛ
blocks: drums, guitar, bass, keys and horns, but it is ÛÛ
augmented by such exotic instruments as gongs and flutes ÛÛ
from Asia, xylophones and string instruments from Africa and ÛÛ
Central American percussion instruments. The use of African ÛÛ
polyrhythms now seems commonplace on a funk or psych album; ÛÛ
Arabic rhythmical structures, African pentatonic scales and ÛÛ
Oriental modes do not. The Whitefield Brothers, and a ÛÛ
multitude of guest ranging from vocalists Edan, Mr. Lif, ÛÛ
Bajka, Percee P and MED to musicians from Antibalas, El ÛÛ
Michels Affair, Quantic and the Dap-Kings, set these ÛÛ
elements in a modern context and, over the course of ÛÛ
thirteen dense tracks, blend them with the fierce funk their ÛÛ
fans have grown to love. Deluxe mini-LP gatefold sleeve with ÛÛ
