How Mad Are You? Pt1
This is a really strange programme. It’s the first of a two-parter following a “bold and audacious experiment” carried out in a country house. Ten volunteers are put through tasks such as paintballing and clearing out cowsheds. Five of them, we’re told, have had mental health problems – anorexia, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, and so on. The question is, can a panel of experts work out which ones? So it’s not really an “experiment” at all. It’s a big game, a kind of reality TV show. That makes it absorbing and thought-provoking, but scientifically it’s a washout: all it proves is that it’s hard to diagnose mental health problems on sight, which we knew already. There are nuggets of interest along the way, though, such as the fact that one symptom of depression is a tendency to explain negative events as if you were the cause of them. But the programme perhaps reveals less about its subjects than about the intriguing psychology of Horizon producers at the moment.
How Mad Are You? Pt. 2
Second part of the special documentary considering where the line between sanity and madness lies as ten volunteers come together for an extraordinary test. With five ‘normal’ volunteers and five who have been officially diagnosed as mentally ill, Horizon asks if you can tell who is who.
